Odd in Oregon!
Good-morning!
Sitting here with red hair dye on my head- waiting for it to do its thing- getting ready to leave for Portland OR.
Question- for those of you out in that neck of the woods...
Any suggestions for fun and interesting things to see?
Shops- beads, jewelry, great thrifty places, arty is always good (Galleries included)
Food- sushi, indian, or a place with a nifty flair?
And of course- anything strange and unusual?
I have not been to Portland and was hoping to hear what you think... I love love love what you think!
Thank you ever so much for your help-
Now - back to the haircoloring!

Very beautiful! In the meditation chapel up top of the cliff there is a wax Mary and baby Jesus that totally creeped me out.

The Convergence 13 web site is still up with lots of good info and links to Portland things. The LJ groups for C-13 had walking city guides too. http://www.convergence13.com/
The Pearl district has the food, art, and things to see. The NW neighborhood and 23rd off of Burnside has fun eclectic shopping. Your best break down of good stuff can be found in Portland Monthly magazine.

Willamette Week is our local alternative paper and another good source for hot spots.

The place everyone needs to go of course is Powell's Books.

cup and saucer on hawthorne is a great place to eat everything!
powells books of course you must go to, on burnside and tenth. a whole city block with multiple floors of books plus a coffee house inside. a wonderful tea place is called the tao of tea and i think it's on division but i could be wrong. anyway its in the south east and you can look it up. they have hundreds of kinds of teas and it is really eastern and mellow and neat inside, good things to eat too. i love that place. best coffee is tinys on twelfth and stumptown on i t hink division. nw 23rd is fun, there is a store on that street called three monkeys that i think you would LOVE!!!
xx
God I miss Portland sometimes :( Have fun and take lots of pictures to share!
portlandia primer
N Mississippi street has a few cool shops to go into, along with the Rebuilding Center which sells used/antique building supplies and stuff as a non-profit. I bet you could find some VERY cool little metal doo dads for projects for a couple of bucks. I once took a printmaking group there to scavenge for art-making supplies and it was a blast!
SCRAP (www.scrapaction.org) is another non-profit a few blocks away that also sells recycled items for creative re-use. Their stock is always changing and you come out of there re-thinking artsy uses for all sorts of things. I used to be a board member there and love that place - and it's right next to Pix Patisserie which sells the best damn chocolate brioche!
McMenamins is a LOCAL chain of brewpubs owned by two brothers that is a pretty good staple of portlandia culture. They take a lot of older historical buildings and transform them into funky eclectic pubs/movie theatres/restaurants, etc. www.mcmenamins.com There is a very cool one in Ne Portland called Kennedy School (on NE 33rd not too far from the airport area).
the Japanese gardens (as others have said) is beautiful. I would also recommend (if you have the time and a car) a drive around Sauvie Island - a farm island community just outside of portland or a hike through part of Forest Park, the largest forested park in the western U.S. The leaves are changing right now and if it stops raining while you're here, it's so pretty.
If you have other questions or want a particular place, etc, drop me a line. And have fun!
Nice to meet you.
So nice to meet you here.
Ah! Wikipedia~! How very cool! What search did you do to find me? I am THRILLED to be a Wiki-girl! Strange and nifty!
Ah! Coming out to Maryland? Where abouts? I live right outside of the City. It is nice to live close and yet... not be in that mess.
Thank you again- and hope to talk more soon!

My husband got a job out there in Hunt Valley. That is the area I'm moving to. We could talk more on email if you like. If you want to see what kind of work I do there are some recent pics posted in my LJ.
How did you get listed on Wikipedia, incidentally? I had never seen a listing for a contemporary artist there before... (maybe I don't get out much, but hey)... as I was reading it I thought that was a great marketing strategy...... your page there looks great! :)
I look forward to chatting!
